Valencia, on the east coast of Spain, is the capital of the autonomous community of Valencia and the third-largest city in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona, with around 800.000 inhabitants within the city limits. Its greater urban area has a total population of around 1.6 million people. The Port of Valencia is the fifth busiest container port in Europe and the busiest on the Mediterranean

Valencia stands on the banks of the River Turia and is located on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula, at the western end of the Mediterranean, facing the Gulf of Valencia. When it was founded by the Romans, it stood on a river island in the Turia, 6.4 kilometres (4 miles) from the sea. The Albufera, a freshwater lagoon and estuary about 11 km (7 ) south of the city, is one of the largest lakes in Spain.
