Polyphenols, Fibers and Microbial Metabolites: Decoding the Gut Dialogue

Kieran Tuohy, University of Leeds, UK

Professor Kieran Tuohy Joins Polyphenols 2026.

Polyphenols 2026 is delighted to welcome Professor Kieran Tuohy, Professor of Energy Metabolism and Microbiome at the University of Leeds, as a featured speaker in Session 2 – Microbiome Dialogue.

Professor Tuohy will present: Polyphenols, Fibers and Microbial Metabolites: Decoding the Gut Dialogue

An internationally recognised expert in gut microbiology and nutrition, Professor Tuohy has pioneered research on how dietary polyphenols and fibers interact with the gut microbiome to shape human health. His work bridges nutrition science, microbial ecology, metabolism, and translational health research, with particular emphasis on the production of bioactive microbial metabolites and their role in cardiometabolic and intestinal health.

Over the past decade, his research has contributed substantially to understanding the complex dialogue between plant-derived compounds and the intestinal microbiota, including the emerging concept of microbial metabotypes that may explain individual responses to diet.

At Polyphenols 2026, Professor Tuohy will explore how microbial metabolism transforms polyphenols and dietary fibers into signaling molecules capable of influencing inflammation, gut barrier function, and systemic physiology. His lecture will provide a cutting-edge perspective on the polyphenol–fiber–microbiome axis and its implications for precision nutrition and future health strategies.

Professor Tuohy’s participation further strengthens the scientific programme dedicated to microbiome research and host–microbe interactions at Polyphenols 2026.
