Best Oral Presentations of Polyphenols Applications 2021
Many Short Oral Presentations were submitted during the 14th World Congress on Polyphenol Applications, held on September 22-24 2021. The attendees voted for the best 3 of these short oral presentations.
Best Short Oral Presentation Award #1
Chosen by the attendees, Nicole Nemetz was discerened an award for her short oral presentation about the Strategies for the Valorization of Berry Pomace in the Food Industry.
Nicole Jasmin Nemetz is currently PhD Student at the University of Bonn (Germany) in the Institute of Nutritional and Food Science, Molecular Food Technology. She is working on the resource-saving processing of berry juice and focused in this study on the recovery of the berry pomace. The goal was a coloring foodstuff (pomace powder) for the applicability in e.g. yogurt.
Best Short Oral Presentation Award #2
Sara Ferraris, PhD in Biomedical Engineering - Politecnico di Torino (Italy), received the best short oral presentation award for her contribution "Polyphenols from Grape Pomaces for the Modulation of the Biological Response of Bioactive Materials". She is active in the field of surface modification and characterization of biomaterials as well as in the design of customized ageing test, durability, stability and release tests.
The research described in the presentation was performed in the framework of an international project NAT4MORE (NATural molecules on the surface of bioactive materials FOR MOdulating the host REsponse to implants, M-ERANET call 2016) coordinated by Politecnico di Torino (DISAT, prof. S. Spriano) in collaboration with Consiglio per la Ricerca in agricoltura e l‟analisi dell‟Economia Agraria (CREA), Innovation Centre Iceland (ICI), Genis (Iceland) and Universidade de São Paulo (USP, Brasil). The project is focused on the extraction of natural molecules (e.g. polyphenols) from local byproducts (e.g. grape pomaces) and graft them to biomaterials (titanium, bioactive glasses and hydroxyapatite) to modulate their biological response. Effective protocols for the functionalization of biomaterials with natural polyphenols and for the characterization of functionalized biomaterials were developed and presented.
Best Short Oral Presentation Award #3
Maria Chiara Di Meo, PhD student in Science and Technology for the Environment and Health at the Department of Science and Technology of the University of Sannio (Benevento, Italy), was discerned an award for her short oral contribution "Characterization and Antioxidant Activity of Bioactive Molecules Extracted from Olea europaea Leaves".
The research group in which she is involved has been working for a long time on the valorisation of bioactive molecules extracted from by-products of agro-food industries and their use in different fields of application. In particular, recent studies have focused on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of bioactive molecules extracted from plant matrices for their use in the formulation of functional and nutraceuticals feeds administered to farm animals. In this study, the phenolic profile extracted from olive leaves in different phenological phases was characterised and the antioxidant activity of bioactive molecules on erythrocytes of trout Oncorhynchus mykiss was evaluated.
