Best Poster Presentations of Polyphenols Applications 2021
During the 14th World Congress on Polyphenol Applications which was held as an interactove online event from September 22 to September 24 2021, the participants voted for the Best Poster Presentations.
Best Poster Presentation Award #1
The first award for the Best Proster Presentation was discerned to Teresa Herrera, PhD in Food Science and Technology, for her presentation on the "Development of Sustainable and Healthy Yogurts with Extracts of Wild Fruits Rich in Polyphenols".
Ms. Herrera's scientific career is mainly engaged in research respect to bioactive compounds, extraction and characterization in legumes and fruits and also in the development of novel dairy products.
"Our study is based on development novel healthy dairy products elaborated with extracts obtained of wild fruits rich in polyphenols. First, we evaluated and characterization wild fruits extracts, and selected the more interesting ones. Then, produce yogurts that incorporate these wild fruits extracts with antioxidants of natural origin as ingredients. This way can be a successful strategy for novel product development and could be valuable potential sources of safe and inexpensive antioxidants of natural origin in yogurts."
Best Poster Presentation Award #2
Another award for the Best Poster Presentation was given to Paulina Tapia Quirós, from Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (Spain). She presented a poster about "Total Polyphenol Content and Antioxidant Capacity of Agri-Food Wastes: Estimation by Spectrophotometric Assays and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography".
"This study is dedicated to the valorization of agri-food wastes. In particular, this work is focused on the determination of the total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity from residues of the olive oil and wine production through different analytical techniques. For that purpose, some spectrophotometric assays (e.g. Folin-Ciocalteu (FC), 2,-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonat (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-UV) technique were used. Overall, the recovery of polyphenols from these agri-food wastes could provide a sustainable solution to olive oil and winery sectors."
