Dr. Jan Claesen, from Cleveland Clinic, USA, will join us this year to present a talk entitled “Gut Microbial Metabolism of Dietary Polyphenols in Health and Disease” in a session dedicated to “Polyphenols & Microbiota – Recent Advances & Perspectives”.
Flavonoids are consumed in a largely glycosylated form, rendering them poorly available for small intestinal absorption and subsequent systemic distribution. Upon reaching the colon, select commensal gut bacteria can catabolize these flavonoid substrates into smaller monophenolic acids.
In his talk, Dr. Claesen will discuss the contribution of microbial catabolism to the beneficial effects of dietary flavonoids in health and in disease.
